For those of you who are interested in tunnel construction, at this point in time, this is one of the major projects being undertaken in Miami, Florida. This $1 billion project is being funded by the Florida Department of Transportation, the City of Miami and Miami-Dade County and will provide direct access to the Port of Miami from I-395 and I-95. This will aid to greatly reduce cargo trucks and port related traffic in the downtown area.
One of the more interesting challenges (of course, in my opinion) is digging through the soft, porous limestone with sand lenses that is typically found in the Miami area all while being constructed underwater.
The Miami Herald was recently given access to walk inside of the tunnel excavation. This video gives an insight to the complexities of tunnel construction. The interesting video can be accessed in the Miami Herald's website by clicking HERE.
